Rebetiko Nation: Sounding an Alternative Contemporary Greekness Through Rebetiko Song (Working Title)
This thesis is an ethnography of Rebetiki Istoria, the oldest and best-known rebetadiko in Athens. It is focused on the way in which Rebetiki Istoria musicians use rebetika to promote an alternative Greek national identity that resists the forces of Europeanization and other perceived negative hybridities of Greek culture.
